Do we really need all this stuff?
Holiday commercialism has been exploding exponentially for years now. Big box stores and shopping malls have been pushing the limit when it comes to Black Friday, finally culminating this year in pepperspray-inducing shopping frenzies beginning before our Thanksgiving dinners have had a chance to be properly digested.
Really? What is it we’re spending our hard-earned cash on, exactly? Future landfill filler?
I think it’s all about becoming a Conscious Consumer? Think you can do it? You’re reading this so I’m going to say “YES!”
Making mindful, informed decisions about your holiday purchases is a great way to start voting with your dollars. Buy locally and support the small, independent businesses in your community instead of surrendering your money to big box stores and corporate chains. Feeling crafty? Handmade gifts speak volumes over mass-produced items. Not to mention, studies show that we remember experiences we have over material things, so consider giving experiential gifts instead of stuff.
While the holidays certainly inspired this train of thought, I propose that this “conscious consuming” is one that should go on all year…become a lifestyle.
This is a space dedicated for those who want to do things a little differently. To create a place where people can share their ideas (crafty and otherwise), vent their frustrations (about this topic
)and let us know how they are doing things differently. Let’s start a movement!
So tell me, how will you be conscious consuming this year? I’d love to hear from you on our Facebook Community page called The Conscious Consumer.
